Last Minute Advice
Last Minute Tipsheet (For last two weeks of application process)

Final reminders:

1) Did you pay with a credit card for your online application ($60)? It's now too late to pay by check if you do not already have a fee waiver. (Fee waiver questions go to UCLA Grad Admissions: 310 825-1711 or 310 825-7290).

2) Do you have the application checklist so you know exactly which supporting documents Afro-American Studies should receive directly?

3) If you are near the deadline, please do NOT use the regular U.S. mail. It will not arrive in time. Use UPS, Federal Express, or another private carrier. Be sure to keep your tracking receipt.

4) Call unergraduate institutions and double-check that all of your transcripts (from EVERY undergrad institution) actually have been sent out. (Pay for expedited service, if not.)

5)Call professors and double-check that all of your letters of recommendation have really been sent.

**If professors think they may be late, have them fax (310) 825-5019 or email a provisional copy, pending receipt of the actual signed copy. Remind them to sign the back of the sealed envelope.

6) If you are taking the GRE near the deadline, be sure to send us a short memo indicating the test date and/or your unofficial Instant Score, pending your official one being transmitted by ETS.

7) Be sure to send both the Statement of Purpose (three (3) pages about your scholarly accomplishments and your scholarly goals at UCLA) AND the two (2) page Personal Statement (about your personal life and economic challenges) to substantiate your application of merit for fellowship funding.

8) Be sure you have checked the GOFP (Graduate Opportunity Fellowship Program) along with other fellowships for which you might be eligible. If you have already done so, contact Grad Division about amending your online application.

9) Writing sample- 6-12 pages.

10) Be sure to sign and date all correspondence to us. Make sure your email account is not full and can accept messages. If you change contact information, let us know right away.

11) Keep up your determination to succeed!

12) Call us to make sure everything arrived on time.
