| The GRE is required for admission to Afro-American
Studies M.A. Program.
For GRE information and free test prep materials, please
visit the GRE website at www.gre.org, email gre-info@ets.org,
or call (609) 771-7670.
We strongly urge you to take a complete GRE prep course
before taking the examination. Check with your college counselor
for available courses in your area.
At UCLA, call: (310) 206-3340, or email: testprep@uclaextension.org.
Note: If possible, try to take the GRE in October, so that
you will have time to re-take, if necessary, before the
December 15 application deadline. You do not have to take
a subject test.
Applicants for admission to the M.A. program must hold
a bachelor's degree in the social sciences or humanities
and demonstrate and interest in African American studies,
either through their previous course of study or in their
future plans.
While the GRE scores are very important, note that M.A.
students are selected on the basis of a wide range of criteria:
Official transcripts
Three academic letters of recommendation
A minimum of 3.0 or B average in the junior/senior
years of college
A statement of purpose describing the applicant's
background in African American Studies, proposed
program of study, and future career goals

of the Graduate Record Exmaination (GRE)
An original term paper or research paper which
best expresses the student's interests and abilities
Other evidence of promise that is deemed relevant,
such as work experience, accomplishments,
or community and public service
Two page personal statement (regarding financial
need) to accompany fellowship applications
(such as the GOFP - Graduate Opportunity Fellowship Program)
Note: If you are applying for the Joint M.A./J.D. Program
- LSAT scores are required (but not GRE). Please inquire
at the Law School Admissions Office for LSAT details (310)
825-4041.
