Inaugurated
in 1974, the Bachelor of Arts Program in Afro-American Studies
offers students the opportunity to study the origins, experiences,
and conditions of people of African descent. The fundamental
goal of the curriculum is to provide students with a comprehensive
and interdisciplinary introduction to the crucial life experiences
of African Americans.
|
| Interdisciplinary
Emphasis |
• Core courses in Afro-American Studies
(critical thinking skills)
|
• Combined with courses in a specific
departmental concentration (see Courses and
Advising links) to acquire specific career-oriented skill
|
The interdisciplinary
emphasis of the program is its principal component and is
designed to overcome the limitations attendant to the study
of a people within a single disciplinary framework. At the
same time, each student is required to select a departmental
concentration, in recognition of the value of acquiring the
conceptual and analytical tools of a traditional discipline.
This curricular structure ensures students a well-rounded
liberal arts education that is useful for continuing education
in graduate or professional school and also provides practical
knowledge for the workplace. |
