The study of black life in America is essential to every American understanding the roots of their identity as Americans.

Bachelor of Arts Program

Inaugurated in 1974, the Bachelor of Arts Program in Afro-American Studies offers students the opportunity to study the origins, experiences, and conditions of people of African descent. The fundamental goal of the curriculum is to provide students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary introduction to the crucial life experiences of African Americans.

Interdisciplinary Emphasis

• Core courses in Afro-American Studies (critical thinking skills)

• Combined with courses in a specific departmental concentration (see   Courses and Advising links) to acquire specific career-oriented skill

The interdisciplinary emphasis of the program is its principal component and is designed to overcome the limitations attendant to the study of a people within a single disciplinary framework. At the same time, each student is required to select a departmental concentration, in recognition of the value of acquiring the conceptual and analytical tools of a traditional discipline.
This curricular structure ensures students a well-rounded liberal arts education that is useful for continuing education in graduate or professional school and also provides practical knowledge for the workplace.
